Ice cream shop planned for former Candlewyck site in Buckingham

A new chapter is taking shape at the former Candlewyck restaurant in Buckingham, where a popular New Jersey ice cream shop is planning to open a second location.

Humdoo Ice Cream, based in Flemington, has signed a lease to move into the longtime Durham Road property, which closed earlier this year after six decades in business, according to WPST.com. Owner Gabriella Truppi told the radio station the expansion has been in the works for about two years as she searched for the right location to bring her brand into Bucks County.

The Candlewyck, a fixture in the community since 1965, shut down following health department issues that led to a voluntary closure late last year. While the business initially indicated renovations were underway, the property remained inactive in recent months, fueling questions about its future. The building itself has deep roots, once serving as a historic feed mill before becoming a well-known restaurant destination.

Humdoo Ice Cream plans to renovate the space while preserving elements of its character, including features like exposed brick and a fireplace, per the report.

The shop will offer 24 handmade ice cream flavors, along with milkshakes, ice cream cakes and other specialty treats. Known for its peanut- and tree nut-free offerings, the brand was inspired by a childhood nickname for ice cream within Truppi’s family.

If all goes as planned, the new shop could open by mid- to late summer, bringing a different kind of crowd — and a sweet new use — to one of Buckingham’s most recognizable properties.
