The Democrats’ mask of moderation

This week, Bucks County families will enjoy one of our most cherished, simple traditions. Carved pumpkins will grin from front porches, children will dress as superheroes and princesses, and the air will be filled with the cheerful demand of “Trick or Treat!”

Halloween is a night of harmless fun when we delight in the theatrical and the spooky. We know the ghouls and goblins knocking on our doors are just the neighbors’ kids in costume. The fright is fleeting, the fun is real, and the mask comes off at the end of the night.

If only the same were true in our political life.

In the daylight world of American politics, a far more deceptive and dangerous masquerade is underway. As we approach another critical election, the most popular costume among the establishment Left isn’t a ghost or a vampire — it’s the “mask of moderation.”

This disguise is carefully crafted. It is designed to look reasonable, sensible, and unthreatening. It preaches about “unity,” “defending democracy,” “norms,” and pushing back against lawless “kings.” It presents itself as a safe harbor from the alleged “extremism” on The Right.

But the mask is slipping. We see it in New York City, where the Democratic Party nominated Zohran Mamdani, an avowed socialist, to lead America’s largest city. This isn’t a one-off. The party’s radical base — funded by millions from George Soros-backed networks — has spent years “engineering” this moment. Mamdani’s platform of city-run grocery stores and his associations with radical activists like Linda Sarsour and extremist imams like Siraj Wahhaj isn’t a fringe idea; it’s the new, true face of the party.

But it’s not just insurgent candidates in blue cities. Former President Joe Biden promised to “heal the soul of the nation” and return us to centrist normalcy. Instead, we got the “Inflation Reduction Act” — a monstrous bill that, in a feat of Orwellian doublespeak, did nothing to reduce inflation while pouring hundreds of billions into Green New Deal fantasies. The moderate mask promised to help the middle class; the radical reality gave us crippling inflation, unaffordable groceries, and energy prices that continue to punish working families.

For years, Democrats at best promised a secure and orderly border and at worst denied any problems existed. The moderate mask assured us it would manage immigration “humanely” while addressing American’s economic and cultural anxiety. The radical reality was the deliberate dismantling of border enforcement, leading to a historic crisis of illegal immigration, a flood of drugs poisoning our communities, and a catastrophic strain on everything from housing to social services.

Perhaps the most ghoulish mask of all is the one when it comes to crime and punishment. It promises “equity” and “fairness.” But behind it is the radical, pro-criminal agenda of progressive prosecutors and their political enablers. Look no farther than next door to Philadelphia, where District Attorney Larry Krasner’s soft-on-crime policies just allowed a repeat violent offender, Keon King, back on the streets to allegedly abduct and murder 23-year-old Kada Scott — the latest of similar tragedies around the nation. This isn’t “reform”; it’s a sacrifice of public safety on the altar of ideology. The moderate mask speaks of “safe streets” while the hands of radical DAs like Krasner release the criminals who terrorize them. What confidence to do you have in local Democrats to not do the same?

Even more galling about this “mask on, mask off” charade? All of it is covered in the cloak of so-called “civility.” We are told constantly that all “extreme” rhetoric and political violence flows from The Right. Yet many are mourning the very real, politically motivated assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. We are witnessing a surge in left-wing plots and violence that, according to a new Center for Strategic & International Studies report, puts 2025 on pace to be the most violent year for leftist extremists in three decades.

This violent rot isn’t just on the fringes; it’s festering within the party itself. In Virginia, Democratic attorney general candidate Jay Jones was just exposed for sending texts fantasizing about a GOP official getting “two bullets to the head” and hoping his children would die. This isn’t just “fringe” behavior; it’s the rotting fruit of an ideology that dehumanizes its opponents. The mask of “decency” is ripped away to reveal a face of pure, chilling malice. Even then, these supposed “moderates” can’t bring themselves to disavow it.

So, why the elaborate costume? Simple: because they know their true agenda is deeply unpopular.

This is the central trick of the modern Left. With the support of the media and legions of activists and NGOs, they campaign like centrists to win places like Bucks County, but they govern like socialists once the votes are counted.

They know that if they ran on what they actually believe — on open borders, on Marxist economics, on prosecuting political rivals, and on letting violent felons walk free — they would be rejected outright.

The mask is their only path to power.

This Halloween, the most terrifying story isn’t a campfire tale about a headless horseman. It’s the real-world story of a political movement that has decided it is worth it to lie about its intentions to gain control. It’s the tale of politicians who look you in the eye and promise normalcy while working to implement a radical transformation of the communities you love.

Our job as citizens is to be discerning. As voters, we must be wise enough to tell the difference between the treat and the trick. The “treat” is the promise of centrist Democratic utopia. The “trick” is the reality of the policies.
