Statewide cell phone ban for drivers now in effect – Bucks Round-Up – June 5, 2025
Statewide cell phone ban for drivers now in effect
A new Pennsylvania law banning drivers from talking on hand-held cell phones took effect today. Known as Paul Miller’s Law, the measure is named after a 21-year-old Monroe County man killed in a chain-reaction crash caused by a truck driver distracted by a phone call. For the next 12 months, police will issue written warnings only, but beginning June 6, 2026, violators will face $50 fines plus court costs. Eileen Miller, Paul’s mother, spent more than a decade pushing lawmakers in Harrisburg to take action on distracted driving. The law permits hands-free use but prohibits holding a phone for any reason while driving.
Illegal immigrant wanted for assault arrested after nine-year manhunt
The Bucks County Sheriff’s Office has announced the capture and extradition of Elias Ortega, a 40-year-old man illegally present in the U.S., wanted since 2016 on serious charges including domestic abuse and sexual assault of a minor. Ortega was initially arrested in Bucks County nearly nine years ago but disappeared after posting bail and facing additional charges. Authorities located him last month in Brooklyn during a traffic stop. Sheriff Fred Harran confirmed Ortega’s return to Bucks County and is now seeking to enroll deputies in an ICE partnership program that would train them to identify and process individuals illegally in the country — especially those already in custody.
Bucks County Community College charts ambitious future
At Wednesday’s commissioners meeting, Dr. Patrick Jones, president of Bucks County Community College, presented a new strategic initiative titled “Bucks County Educational Partner of Choice.” The plan focuses on strengthening partnerships with local K-12 schools and expanding access to college-level coursework for high school students. Through the Bucks County College Access Network, students can continue earning credits via dual enrollment at their schools, online, or on BCCC campuses. Dr. Jones emphasized the importance of building educational pathways that serve Bucks families and prepare students for both careers and four-year institutions.
