Quakertown grad overcomes years of injuries to reach NCAA Division III wrestling championships

A Quakertown graduate who once questioned whether he would ever wrestle again is now competing for a national championship.

According to The Morning Call, York College senior and intelligence analysis major Josh Stahl enters this weekend’s NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, as the No. 2 seed at 197 pounds with a 34-1 record, capping a journey defined by persistence after years of injuries.

Stahl’s wrestling path nearly ended before it began. A knee injury requiring surgery wiped out his senior season at Quakertown High School, leaving him uncertain about his future in the sport, according to the article. During recovery, he stepped away from wrestling and even tried boxing after seeing training videos online. Despite staying active in the gym, he said the sense of purpose he once had in wrestling was missing, according to The Morning Call.

Eventually, the desire to compete returned, leading Stahl to reconnect with the sport and enroll at York College. His comeback, however, was anything but smooth. According to the report, over several years he endured repeated injuries, including multiple knee and shoulder surgeries that forced him to miss entire seasons.

At times he considered quitting, but each recovery period eventually led him back to training and competition, according to the article.

The persistence has paid off. After fighting through years of setbacks, Stahl, who recently interned with Homeland Security while exploring a potential career in federal law enforcement, rebuilt his career and now finds himself in position to compete on one of college wrestling’s biggest stages.
