Pennsbury offers information for start of new school year

Information on the new school year at Pennsbury School District was outlined at the recent Pennsbury School Board meeting by Superintendent Thomas Smith, including help for less fortunate students. “On Monday we had the Start School Write event where some students were provided with a backpack full of goodies as well as a back-to-school haircut,” he said.  Dr. Smith also talked about orientation. “It takes place on September 2, the day after Labor Day,” he said. “Kindergarten, sixth grade, and ninth grade, a full day of orientation for those students and the elementary open houses, this is taking place during that same day as the orientation on September 2.”  All schools in the Pennsbury School District open on September 3 and the Act 34 Hearing to discuss the high school project is scheduled for September 4.  Pennsbury students will begin new start times, according to Smith: “This has been a long-discussed topic and now it’s happening this school year, new start times for high school students, the high school will start at 8:15 a.m. to 2:58 p.m., the middle schools start at 7:35 a.m. and end at 2:20 p.m.”  Smith added there will be no changes to the elementary school schedule.

Middletown receives funds for advanced warning system

Middletown Township’s new advanced warning system will be set up on the South Flowers Mill Road bridge due to several incidents where trucks have become stuck under the bridge, often spilling cargo on the road. Township Manager Eden Ratliff says residents are aware of the problems at the location: “We’re having bridge accidents involving trucks that are larger than the bridge can handle, where they end up striking the bridge and in the worst case, spilling their contents all over the street and creating major traffic accidents and traffic jams and then of course, cleanup and repairs to the bridge.” Middletown Township is in the preliminary engineering stage to determine the warning system that will be most effective for the bridge. Middletown Township was granted $200,000 in state budget funds to carry out the project, which should take less than one year to complete. State Senator Frank Farry (R-Langhorne) and Bucks County State Representative Joe Hogan (R-Langhorne) were instrumental in securing the state funding for Middletown Township.

State rep to host Mid Fest to provide info for 25 to 59 age groups

Bucks County State Representative Jim Prokopiak will host an event called Mid Fest at Falls Township Community Park on Saturday September 6 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Prokopiak, who addressed the Falls Township Supervisors Monday night in an effort to obtain a conditional use approval for the sale of alcohol at the event, said more needs to be done to inform all people about key information. “One thing that we learned is that we do a very good job at communicating those resources to people who are older, to senior citizens, and we do not do a great job of communicating those resources to people who are under the age of 60. So this event is sort of designed to allow people to see all of the resources at the state level and the local level for those people who are 25 to 59 years of age.” The Mid Fest will feature a workforce development van, available for anyone looking for a new job; the community college will be on hand. Other information will be available from PennDOT to the Pennsylvania State Police. There will be live entertainment, food, and adult beverages, which is expected to be supplied by Broad Street Brewing. The Falls Township Supervisors approved of the sale of alcohol at the event.

Joe LeCompte hosts LeCompte in the Morning on WBCB 1490.
