Grand jury finds widespread illegal THC sales in smoke shops
A grand jury in Montgomery County uncovers what officials are calling a “public health crisis” driven by unregulated smoke shops across the region, including Bucks County. The investigation — coordinated by Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele, Bucks County DA Jennifer Schorn, and other law enforcement agencies — discovered nearly 94% of THC products purchased undercover exceeded legal limits. The probe that provided key information to the grand jury revealed that local retailers were selling marijuana and high-grade THC vapes and edibles made to look like legal “hemp” products, often without age checks. Bucks County detectives participated in the probe and have seized thousands of THC vapes from area schools. Bucks County D.A. Jennifer Schorn described the industry’s loopholes as a “clear and present public health threat,” calling for new state laws to regulate sales, require testing, and impose age limits.
AAA warns of Halloween safety risks on a busy weekend
With Halloween falling on a Friday this year, AAA Mid-Atlantic is urging families and motorists across Bucks County to be extra cautious. The combination of trick-or-treaters, Halloween parties, and the end of daylight saving time is expected to bring heavier traffic, more pedestrians after dark, and the risk of impaired or drowsy driving. AAA spokesperson Jana Tidwell warned that Halloween remains one of the deadliest nights of the year for children on foot. National data show kids are more than twice as likely to be struck and killed by a car on Halloween than any other day, and 40% of fatal crashes involve a drunk driver. AAA’s advice: Slow down, eliminate distractions, keep headlights on, and make sure costumes are visible. PennDOT figures show Pennsylvania recorded more than 3,200 pedestrian crashes in 2024, resulting in 174 deaths. While fatalities were down slightly from 2023, distracted and impaired driving remain leading factors. Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead for a sober ride home if they celebrate.
