Fetterman breaks (again) with Dems, advances Mullin for DHS
Another day, another Democratic disappointment in Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman.
The Keystone State’s senior senator broke ranks from his Democratic colleagues and voted in favor of advancing President Donald Trump’s choice for Department of Homeland Security secretary, Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.).
It appeared that Mullin’s nomination was in jeopardy, following the no vote from Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) in the Senate Homeland Security Committee. With the committee divided between eight Republicans and seven Democrats, the nomination would have stalled in committee. But Fetterman’s “aye” sends it to the full Senate for consideration.
“My AYE is rooted in a strong committed, constructive working relationship with Senator Mullin for our nation’s security,” tweeted Fetterman on social media.
A Senate vote has yet to be scheduled, but could take place as early as next week. Trump has said he wants Mullin in place by March 31.
It is the latest break by Fetterman from his Democratic colleagues. The former state lieutenant governor said earlier in the week on the “All-In Podcast” that his party does not have a leader and that “Trump Derangement Syndrome” controls the party.
Congressman Brendan Boyle (D-02), who is believed by some to be eyeing a possible Senate run of his own in 2028, was critical of Fetterman’s vote.
“Once again Sen. Fetterman shows why he is Trump’s favorite Democrat,” he tweeted on social media. “He needs to go.”
“Senator Mullin tried to justify a violent attack on me. Now he wants to lead ICE and Border Patrol? You cannot restore law and order with someone who has an anger problem,” Paul said on Twitter. “America deserves better.”
