Concerns linger over canceled Newtown sewer plant – Bucks Round-Up – June 13, 2025

Concerns linger over canceled Newtown sewer plant

Despite a formal vote to scrap a controversial sewage treatment plant on Newtown Bypass, fears persist that the plan may resurface. At this week’s Newtown Township Board of Supervisors meeting, Dana Rivera of Middletown Township, who lives near the proposed site, raised concerns about renewed talk of the project moving forward. Board Chair Elen Snyder firmly assured residents the plant “is not being built,” urging the public to trust her statement. Supervisor Phillip Calabro suggested the township invite Mike Manditto, manager of the Newtown Joint Municipal Authority, to the next board meeting to publicly clarify the matter and ease community doubts.

Bristol councilwoman urges residents to speak up

In Bristol Borough, North Ward Councilwoman Maria Figueroa called on residents to report neighborhood issues directly to her office. At this week’s borough council meeting, Figueroa emphasized she “can’t take action on something that she does not know about.” Figueroa is currently working with Amtrak to address litter and debris along train tracks bordering Spruce, Race, and nearby streets. She encouraged residents with concerns in the North Ward to reach out via email at [email protected].

County official warns of vacation rental scams

With summer vacation season ramping up, Bucks County’s Consumer Protection Director Mike Bannon is reminding residents to stay vigilant against rental scams. Bannon, who appeared this week on the WBCB Show Upwards with Chris Ermer, cautioned that some online listings pose as legitimate real estate offers but are actually fraudulent. He recommends Googling property addresses to ensure photos haven’t been copied from other sites and advises paying with a credit card — not a debit card — when traveling, for added protection. “Do your homework,” Bannon said, to avoid falling prey to scammers targeting summer renters.
