Centennial plaintiffs ask judge to wait for CBSD decision

Lawyers representing teachers alleging pay discrimination on the basis of sex in Centennial School District are requesting that a federal court pause that case’s proceedings while an appeals court considers similar litigation regarding Central Bucks School District. Months ago, U.S. District Court Judge Michael Baylson ended a previous stay on the Centennial case, brought by teachers Denise Kravitz and Lori Warren, after a jury awarded damages to two CBSD teachers. CBSD appealed that decision to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit where it awaits a decision. Attorneys for Kravitz and Warren, two teachers alleging they were improperly placed on the lowest strata of the district’s compensation schedule, note the near identical nature of the Central Bucks case to the Centennial lawsuit, which Baylson is also trying.

Budget stalemate centers on SEPTA funding

Pennsylvania lawmakers will work through the weekend as Harrisburg’s budget impasse drags on, with SEPTA’s future emerging as the key sticking point. House Democrats are demanding $300 million in taxpayer funding for the transit agency, while Senate Republicans want a long-term revenue source and more investment in roads and bridges. Bucks County State Sen. Frank Farry (R) is spearheading an alternative plan: tax “skill games” — legal slot-style machines in bars and convenience stores — which he says could bring in $500 million a year for transit and infrastructure. SEPTA, facing a $219 million deficit, says it will cut service on 32 bus and rail routes and raise fares. Service reductions will start on August 24. Septa bus 127 and 128, which serve riders in lower Bucks County, are among the bus routes to be cut.

Local mechanic sounds alarm on ‘extra’ dealership repairs

A Fairless Hills mechanic is warning car owners — especially those with newer vehicles — to beware of dealership repair lists that may be padded with unnecessary work. Fred Fletcher, owner of Fletcher’s Garage and host of WBCB’s Under The Hood, says he recently saved two customers about $4,000 each after reviewing dealership recommendations for cars with only 20,000 miles. While not illegal, Fletcher says the practice is unethical and hurts the industry’s reputation. His advice: always get a second opinion before signing off on costly repairs.

Joe LeCompte hosts LeCompte in the Morning on WBCB 1490. Bradley Vasoli is the senior editor of The Independence.
