Bristol Township School Board OKs $180M budget with $10.35-per-month tax bump

The Bristol Township School Board unanimously approved a $180.3 million budget Tuesday night that includes a property tax increase. The plan raises the average homeowner’s tax bill by roughly $10.35 per month. Board President James Morgan called it a “small” increase and emphasized that this marks the district’s first tax hike in six years. Board member Gallus Obert noted the district has made major strides without asking  more from taxpayers until now. “If we want to keep giving students the treatment they deserve — especially at Armstrong Middle School — then this is what needs to be done,” Obert said.

Newtown bridge renamed for local Vietnam hero

A Newtown bridge now bears the name of a fallen hometown hero. Bucks County Bridge No. 39, located on Wrights Road, was officially renamed the Warrant Officer William Herbert McDonnell Memorial Bridge during a moving ceremony Tuesday morning. McDonnell was just 19 when he was killed in Vietnam in 1969. He was piloting a Huey helicopter on a combat mission when enemy rocket fragments struck the aircraft, causing it to crash. Ed Preston of the Pennsylvania Vietnam Veterans Memorial Foundation described McDonnell — known to friends and family as “Bill” — as a courageous serviceman who died providing cover for ground troops. The event drew McDonnell’s relatives, Bucks County Commissioners, an honor guard, and even a flyover by a Huey helicopter.
